About Bakersfield, California
Bakersfield, California, is a thriving inland city. It is the largest city in Kern County, the 9th most populous in the state, and the 53rd most heavily populated in the country. The city covers about 151 square miles of land, and as of the 2010 census, 347,483 people call this place home. A very diverse city, Bakersfield has everything from historical buildings full of knowledge to more modern attractions for those seeking a good time. Bakersfield is also an important hub for more than one industry. Kern County is the most productive oil-producing county in the state and the country's fourth most productive agricultural county. Other industries with a foothold in Bakersfield include petroleum refining, food processing, mining, distribution, and regional corporate offices.
A large city with a small-town mindset, Bakersfield has many community events for its residents. Ten months of the year have multiple festivals enjoyed by many, the exceptions being the summer months of June and July. The first event of the year is the beloved Polar Bear Plunge, which typically takes place on New Year's Day, where hundreds of locals gather at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center, where they brave the frigid temperatures and almost freezing water by sliding down one of the large water slides, followed by a 25-yard swim to the edge of the pool.
Throughout the year, cultural food festivals abound, such as the Jewish and Greek Food Festivals, respectively, as well as some that are more specific, such as the Macaroni and Cheese Festival. There is the Bike, Basque, Cherry, and multiple genres of music festivals. If there is one thing this city is good at, it is coming together for a good time. The highlight of the year is the Kern County Fair. For two weeks at the end of September, join in the action of carnival rides, games of skill, corn dogs and funnel cakes. Watch as award-winning livestock are judged and you can even partake in the livestock auction.
A young city, Bakersfield, has recently experienced a boom in the population. The low housing costs have been attracting younger residents who have become disenfranchised by the exorbitant cost of living of the coastal cities. Because the city has developed so much over the last few years, it has grown alongside many of its residents, naturally becoming a great place to raise a family. The public amenities of Bakersfield are nothing short of amazing, with 61 public parks, 13 spray parks, four public pools, two sports complexes, two skateparks, and more. Spending time outdoors has never had so many options.
